The story

National Day among islands and rocky shores.

On 6 June 2019, we spent Swedish National Day on Styrsö and Donsö in Gothenburg’s southern archipelago. A lovely day with the sea close by and plenty of views worth pausing for.

The photographs take us from blue water and island houses to views across rocks, greenery and islands. Narrow paths wind between the smooth rocks, and a sailboat catches the sunshine out on the water.

There was time for both fika and outdoor cooking along the way. One photograph shows dinner on a lap: pasta with sauce and vegetables, served in a camping bowl. A simple meal outdoors is something we love making time for on our walks.

Towards evening, warmer light fell across the rocks. The bridge between the islands and the sun over the sea became part of our photographic memories of the day. The final photograph catches a golden trail of sunlight across the water — a lovely ending to our National Day in the archipelago.
